Our family have been farming Red Deer in Tikokino, Central Hawkes Bay for over 40 years. My late father Bruce started farming Deer in the late 70’s early 1980’s, this started from a passion of hunting them and a desire to farm something different.

Bruce always concentrated on using Big bodied Red Deer with clean velvet and quiet temperament. When I came home to run the farm in the early 2000’s, this provided a great base to drive my desire to focus on Heavy beamed tidy Velvet Genetics.

After meeting my wife Sally in 2007, we purchased the farm from Dad in 2009 and were married in 2010. In 2013 we lost Bruce in a tragic farming accident. We now have two beautiful children, Harry 7 and Lottie 6. After losing my father, it has created a real drive and passion to take what we have and really push things to the next level with what we do on and off the farm!

We set out to source the best English Red Deer Velvet Genetics we could alongside DNA profiling every hind on the property so that we could really start to have some usable information moving forward and to accelerate the genetic gains that we were already achieving. This is not a quick or cheap investment but has been well worth while as now the amount of background information we have on our hinds allows us to make better breeding decisions moving forward while allowing our clients to have more information on what breeding decisions they are investing in.

When you are farming a product such as Velvet and Antler your genetic gains are incredibly quick due to the heritability of these products. This is what gets us out of bed in the morning and one of the main drivers of why we are so passionate about the products we produce and deliver to our customers. We have stuck to the core selection criteria of Heavy beamed clean tidy velvet, Big bodied Sires, Great temperament and good constitution. These traits are all extremely important to us as we are delivering a breeding Sire/production female with elite Velvet Genetics. These animals have to be able to move to any farming environment around the country and perform as well if not better than they do on our Class 6 Hill country.
